NEWPORT, R.I. — A lot more than sailing will be going on at Fort Adams State Park when the international fleet competing in the Volvo Ocean Race stops in Newport in May.

For sure, the six boats now racing toward Auckland, New Zealand, will compete in an in-port race on Narragansett Bay on Saturday, May 16, the day before they start the fifth leg of the 39,000-mile round-the-world race that takes them to 11 ports on five continents.

Fort Adams State Park will be turned into a Destination Village that is likely to attract as many as 14,000 people on its busiest days, according to Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport, which is organizing the Newport stopover.
